HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL

The Madurai Diraviyam Thayumanavar Hindu College Hr. Sec. School is one of the oldest seats of learning in south India.

A meeting of the principal hindu citizens of Tirunelveli was called in the 19th Century as the throughful and religious section of the Hindu Society of Tirunelveli District felt the Intense and successful proselytizing efforts in the school managed by Protestant Missionaries as a direct challenge to their life and culture. Their deliberations resulted in 1859 in the establishment, on a very small scale, of an "Anglo Vernacular School" at Therku Puthu street in Tirunelveli Town. In 1861, the set school was moved in the name of "Hindu Kalasalai" to a site in Veeraraghavapuram an unimportant suburb, till the advent of the railway in 1876. It has grown steadily from strength to strength into a great school and now caters to the educational needs of many students every year. Mr. Vedanayagam Pillai was the first Headmaster of the school. In June 1865, the school was moved to its own building. The school went on increasing in strength, finance and popularity and sent its first set of students for the Matriculation Examination in 1867.

Encouraged by the successful functioning of the school, its management decided to start a college in 1878 under the category of II grade and named it as Hindu College, Tinnelvelly. Thiru P. Sundaram Pillai who later achieved great name for his Tamil Poetic Drama "Manonmaniam" and who was already working as Headmaster of the school was appointed as the first Principal of the Hindu College. The college was raised to the first-grade status in 1924. The transformation involved a heavy financial burden for the Management, which grew severe in 1929. The university authorities insisted on the payment of the capital fund of Rs 1 lakh with a threat of this disaffiliation of the college, if not deposited.

At that time, the Principal was Prof. Alexander Gnanamuthu, the Secretary was Thiru M.D.T. Kumaraswamy mudaliyar with President Thiru I.C. Eswaran Pillai and Treasurer Thiru T.Sankaranarayana Pillaiyan approached the two philanthropists, Thiru Diraviyam Pillai and Thiru Thayumanaswamy Pillai, native in Madurai and received the donation of 1 lakh rupees and saved the institution from the financial crisis. The institution was named as “THE MADURAI DIRAVIYAM THAYUMANAVAR HINDU COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL" bearing the names of the donor and his cousin on 23rd January 1936 at the insistence of the donors.

The donation of Rs. 1 lakh offered to the institution by Diraviyam Pillai was wildly admired and appreciated by one and all. The birthday of Diraviyam Pillai in his birth star Mirugaseeridam in the Tamil month of Aani is celebrated as "Donors Day" in the school campus till date. The Management comprises a hereditary member permanently to honour the donors.
